LNMIIT IS TOBACCO FREE……..REALLY???

The year 2011, LNMIIT witnessed a numerous changes in the campus from new hostels to lecture halls, from faculty to students and many more but the most appealing was making campus tobacco free. The anti-tobacco sessions were conducted including the implementation of posters on major areas of concern in the campus, boasting and consoling our minds that the revolution will bring a change. These claims invariably proved wrong and people take pride to be an offender time to time.

The problem is not quite as simple as it would be as typical law enforcer takes privilege of imposing fines on students. The students possibly might not be responsible for spoiling the environment of the campus and indulging themselves in accidents, mishap happened in the campus. The guards, workmen and drivers are often seen smoking with their so called “cigarette” in the campus. Why they do not attract the attention of the authorities in campus? If the rules are made then they must be same for each and every member on the campus.

There is no question that smoking is addictive. However not everyone is affected the same way. Some people are never able to kick the habit while others seem to be able to quit on a whim. At college level nobody is kid who can’t make a judgement whether the thing is right or wrong as the person is mature enough to make decisions on his own. It is not a major concern about our college but also for the other colleges including the prestigious institutes like IITs and NITs where the students involve themselves in these activities. Why these colleges do not reveal the consciousness about the smoking activities thus allowing student to pursue their interest rather concerning about the health. By this we show an awkward example to society about the college that here at LNMIIT rules are formed to be broken and people pursue these activities duty unto death.

In my point of view prohibition can be useful only if its implementation is made possible but since that cannot be achieved, we can leave thinking of prohibition, and social awareness of evils of this addiction should be spread. This may possibly lead to people leaving the evil themselves. If the authorities are implementing the rules then measures should be taken to adhere to the laws rather than simply executing on papers.

  1. In this world various type of people exist and so is different the way to deal with them. For some people the threat of fine being imposed is sufficient to keep them away from tobacco while others are able to get this thing stuck into their mind after losing a few bucks and still some species exist who has developed robust immunity against administrative measures need to be properly motivated i.e.through social awareness which
we can hope will lead them to turn down this bad habit themselves.
But these two things i.e. administrative control and awareness activities need to be synchronized and should not be secluded from each each other.

    1. Why all these administrative control and awareness activities are for students only? Why not for whole of LNMIIT, why only students are fined. Students are not the only ones who are smoking.
